Two held in Cuttack loot, gangrape case

Under duress from widespread criticism and public outcry, the Commissionerate police on Wednesday claimed to have arrested two persons in connection with last week’s loot and gangrape case of Jhinkiria under the Cuttack Sadar police station.

Cuttack city DCP Sanjeev Arora told reporters that two youths from Dhamnagar in Bhadrak district are arrested and they would be produced in court on Thursday. Taking the plea that any disclosure at this stage would hamper the investigation, he refused to divulge anything.

At least four intruders allegedly raped a married woman after looting her ornaments, cash and a mobile phone in the midnight of July 26. The woman was with her two minor children at the time of the incident as her husband was away from home attending an ailing relative in a hospital.

Police, however, refused to share details as to how the miscreants came from a distance of over 100 km to commit the crime here in the city. Police said the arrested have some criminal cases pending against them at their native district but refused to say anything about any previous rivalry between the accused and the victim family.
