Two back-to-back firing incidents in two days have put the Cuttack city police in a tizzy while the citizens are shocked as to how even minor altercation of words is ending in shootouts.

Following a firing incident under the Barang police station late on Sunday evening in which one person was killed and another injured grievously, the worries of Commissionerate police mounted when a similar incident happened under the Choudwar police station on Monday.

Reports said that over a previous rivalry between two families in the Gridco colony, two persons, including a woman, were injured in the firing in Choudwar. “The rivalry between the families took a turn on Sunday night when a woman, Manjulata Mohanty, was attacked by the rival Samal family. Manjulata received head injuries,” said local Police Inspector Ajay Kumar Das.

Enraged over last night’s attack, Manjulata’s son attacked the Samal family on Monday afternoon in which Ajay Samal received a bullet injury in his right cheek, Das said, adding that a country-made pistol was retrieved from the spot.

While two cases were registered in this connection, no one was yet arrested, the police said, adding that both the injured persons are

undergoing treatment in the SCB Medical College Hospital here.
