Two arrested in U'kote despite bail from HC

In apparent violation of constitutional rights, the Umarkote police detained Ranjan Baniya and Krusna Gouda of Kodobhota village for almost 24 hours without producing them before a court.

They were also badly thrashed by the police in detention when they wanted to know why they were arrested.

According to sources, the police barged into the houses of duo on Sunday night at about 10.30 pm and took them to the police station stating that a non-billable warrant was pending against them in a case in 2013.

When the advocate of the victims intervened and apprised the police that the duo had been released on bail by the local court by the order of the Orissa High Court, the police hurriedly released the duo compelling them to write an undertaking.

Police, however, defended their action stating the warrant recall order of the court as having been misplaced. Following the arbitrary action of the police, the victims threatened to lodge a complaint before the State Human Rights Commission and a case in the local court.
