The villagers of the Nilgiri area are spending sleepless nights as a tusker straying into their areas is wreaking havoc.

Reports said the jumbo created panic in the Mahishapata area under Nilgiri block on Friday night. Besides damaging the crop fields, the pachyderm also devoured the stored grains, fruits, foods and other eatables.

The tusker even ate up dry food packets like  kurkure and biscuit breaking into a shop at Salabani village, apart from damaging a  large number of houses and fruit bearing  trees  and  plants  in the patch.

The elephant   sneaked into the village via Arapata jungle and initially destroyed the boundary wall of Kansa high school and later entered into a jungle at Gopalpur near Ayodhya.

Nilgiri Range Officer Manwar Khan with staff rushed to the spot and tried to chase the elephant into the forest. However, after a long operation, the elephant moved towards Gopalpur forest late at night, reports added.

Reports also added that the lone pachyderm which has migrated from Jharkjand a few days ago had created panic in the Bhimda area of the neighbouring Mayurbhanj district.
