A 60-year-old woman of Bargaon block of Sundargarh district was crushed to death by a tusker on Saturday evening.
Tension prevailed at the spot as locals blamed forest officials’ inaction resulting in the rise of elephant menace in the district.
A 22-member elephant herd had entered Chamunda village.
The woman, who was returning to her house, came in front of a tusker, which pulled her by his trunk and crushed her.
The woman died on the spot. The deceased was identified as Sula Kissan.
"We paid Rs 20,000 to the family of the victim for meeting funeral expenditure as an advance of compensation," a forest official said. "The remaining amount of Rs 3.8 lakh will be released to the family after completion of formalities," he added.
