In yet another elephant attack, a 55-year-old man was trampled to death during late night on Sunday in Rajgangpur forest range. A team of forest officials reached the spot on Monday morning and sent the body for post mortem.

The deceased was identified as Gobardhan Lakra (55) of Modi Dipa Sahi of Kendu Kudur village. Gobardhan, being a farmer, used to guard his farm land during night time.

Accordingly, on Sunday night, he was keeping a watch over his farm land, when at about 2 am, a ten-member elephant herd had entered in to his area.

When he attempted to keep the elephants away from his farm land, one elephant attacked Gobardhan and crushed him to death on the spot.

The elephants had reportedly damaged the farm land, before leaving the spot.

Assistant Conservator of Forest, Rourkela, Dilip Sahoo said, “We have paid Rs 20,000 to the family of the victim, as an advance amount to meet the funeral expenses. The remaining amount of Rs 3.8 lakh would be paid later.”
