Members of the Trade Union Centre of India (TUCI) State Committee on Monday staged demonstration in front of the Office of the labour Commissioner here demanding immediate withdrawal of the debarring order slapped on the Odisha Nirman Shramik Union (ONSU) and provision of facilities to building and construction workers.
TUCI central committee member and ONSU president Sivaram alleged that labour Commissioner-cum-Member Secretary of the Odisha Building and Other Construction Workers Welfare Board has issued a notice to the ONSU saying that the trade union was debarred from issuing certificates of employment as per rule 265(2)(iii). Shivaram termed the Board’s move illegal and unfortunate.
“There is a very big gap between the objectives of the Building and Other Construction Workers (RE and CS) Act 1996 and the results available in the ground zero,” said Shivaram, adding, “The labourers are yet to get their legitimate rights even after 19 years of the law that came into existence in the country.”
The trade union leader also said the State Government should refrain from conspiring to end the labour movement by trying out to separate the workers from the unions.
