Tribals assert their right at N'ragpur rally

Published on:

Tribals under the banner of the Janajati Suraksha Manch (JSM) held a rally here on Wednesday in support of their charter of demands.

Nearly 10,000 tribals, mostly women and youths, brandishing axes, lathis and their traditional weapons took out a procession from Chamuriaguda to the Collectorate and submitted the charter of demands to Sub-Collector Suman Behera.

The JSM vented their resentment over non-tribal persons fraudulently obtaining the Schedule Tribe certificates to take advantage of the quota system.

It demanded that issuing of fake certificates be stopped and that fake tribal people in Government jobs or educational institution or elective posts be punished.

The tribals also demanded expeditious restoration of their rights on land and a ban on sale of country liquor and illegal manufacturing units of country liquor (Vatis) operating at villages in the tribal areas.

local Congress MP Pradeep Majhi, former MP Parshuram Majhi and former MlA Sadan Nayak addressed the gathering in front of the Collectorate
