The hollowness of safer maternity in the State is exposed once again.

Despite repeated phone calls to the nearby District Headquarters Hospital, an ambulance came an hour late forcing a tribal woman deliver a baby in a crowded vegetable market of Jharsuguda on Saturday.

Half an hour later, the woman was taken to the hospital by the late coming ambulance with her baby.

In spite of the apathy of the Government hospital of Jharsuguda, both mother and child are safe. But this incident has prompted people to raise a question over the Government's claim of safer maternity.

The woman is Ashrita Barua (34) from Kuchinda's Guljhapa village of Sambalpur district, who comes to Jharsuguda town for selling vegetables.
