Transgenders protest AIDS claim

Transgenders on Wednesday lashed out at the NGO that claimed that 30 of them in the Capital city are afflicted with AIDS virus. Protesting the NGO report, hundreds of third gender people took out a rally from Ram Mandir Square to the State Human Rights Commission office at Satyanagar where they submitted a memorandum to the Commission.

Alleging that NGOs are misappropriating funds availed from the Government and other sources, the transgenders said the NGO made the AIDS claim as another step to source more financial support in the name educating us.

The transgenders are protesting under the banner of Nikhila Odisha Hijra Mahasangha. “The NGO is telling a lie. The report of the NGO violates our human rights and put a question mark on our dignity and self-esteem,” said Mahasangha president Meneka Kinnar. Meneka demanded a thorough enquiry into the matter. “The Commission listened to our grievances and assured us to conduct an enquiry in the matter,” said Meneka.

The Mahasangha also decided to submit a memorandum to the Governor and CBI Director. “We will submit memorandums to the Governor and CBI Director urging them to conduct an enquiry into source and utilisaiton of funds availed to NGOs for our betterment,” said Meneka.
