To sensitise police officers about the investigation procedure regarding human trafficking and rehabilitation, Crime Against Women and Children Wing (CAW & CW), CID CB, Odisha in collaboration with UNICEF organised a workshop here on Tuesday.

Police officers from the rank of Sub-Inspector (SI) to Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) from 12 districts of the region participated in the workshop which was inaugurated by the ADG, CAW & CW, CID CB, Rekha Lohani in presence of IG Police (NR), Deepak Kumar and Sambalpur SP B Ganagadhar.

The two-day long workshop will  conclude on Wednesday.

“The main focus of today’s workshop is on human trafficking. To tackle human trafficking, there are human trafficking units to investigate crime against women in every district of the State,” said Lohani. “The workshop is being organised for the training and capacity building of the officers of the units. To make it more informative and knowledgeable of the officers, we have invited resource persons from the International Justice Mission,” she said.

She further informed that 137 cases of human trafficking had been reported last year in Odisha and 120 persons had been chargesheeted. “Because of the lack of awareness among people, the human trafficking problem is aggravating,” she said urging people to inform the senior police officers whenever such cases of human trafficking come to their notice.

“The Odisha Government is very proactive regarding the issues related to women and children.  Our collaboration with police will go a long way and a lot of work could be done for the protection of women and children,” an official from UNICEF said.
