The Manav Adhikar Suraksha Manch has demanded cancellation of the proposal for a liquor distillery in Brahmapur and immediate implementation of the Orissa Prohibition Act 1956. Manch members on Friday submitted a memorandum in this regard to the Governor though the RDC.

The Manch also demanded immediate closure of the Beverage Corporation. The members too demanded stoppage of a liquor industry by the Chilika Distillery Company at Kanak Mouja in Khallikote tehsil. “To maintain peace in society and for protection of women and children, we have demanded the closure of the project,” said Maguni Nahak of the Manch.

He pointed out that political parties have been encouraging poor daily labourers to take liquor to take part in their propaganda.

Nahak said that in the last 15 years of the BJD Government, the number of licensed liquor shops has increased three times. For this reason, the financial condition of the common people has been deteriorating, Nahak added.
