A youth committed suicide by hanging self at G Rautput village in Dasamantpur of Koraput district on Sunday after being tortured in public by his lover’s family and other villagers.
Though the youth along with his girlfriend had attempted to commit suicide by hanging themselves from a roof ceiling, the girl luckily survived as the rope, in which she tied her neck, snapped.
The girl was rushed to a hospital and her condition was stated to be stable.
The deceased Jadu Muduli was in love with the young woman of the same village. But family members of both were opposing the relationship as they belonged to different castes.
Jadu ran away with his lover on the day of her marriage with another person and came back to the village after four days. Reports said the girl’s family demanded Rs 1 lakh from the Jadu’s family, but the latter refused. They then thrashed the couple mercilessly in public view. At Jadu’s house, where he and the girl stayed after being tortured, the unhappy couple had decided to end their lives. Meanwhile, the police are investigating into the incident after lodging an UD case.
