The Diabetes and Endocare Clinic, Brahampur in association with the Sashibhusan Rath Government Women’s College organised a programme here on Thursday to commemorate the Thyroid Awareness Month of January.
Brahmapur Municipal Corporation Mayor K Madhavi and Ronald educational group chairman J Jayalakshmi graced the occasion as guests. Principal Sangita Babu presided over the meeting and Diabetes and Endocare Clinic’s Dr Sunil Kumar Kota attended as the chief speaker. Dr Sunil explained about causes, symptoms and treatment of various thyroid disorders.
Thereafter, Mayor K Madhavi and Tehsildar Rasmi Ranjan Nayak flagged off an awareness rally in which around 350 students participated. The students carried placards containing information on thyroid disorders.
Now, 12 per cent of total Indian population is affected with thyroid disorders. Earlier the cause was iodine deficiency, now these are predominantly due to autoimmune imbalance. These are seen five times more commonly in females. Hypothyroidism is a state associated with low thyroid hormone levels in the body. It presents with weight gain, body aches, dry skin, tiredness, hair fall, constipation, irregular menses, infertility and depression.
Hyperthyroidism denotes high thyroid hormone levels in body and presents with weight loss, trembling of hands, palpitation, feeling of excess heat, sweating, repeated motions and redness of eyes. It can affect newborns, growing children with impaired mental, physical and sexual growth. Thyroid testing should ideally be done in all pregnant ladies to avoid complications, informed Dr Sunil.
