Nearly a month after an allegation of HIV blood transfusion at the Burla hospital, occurrence of such an incident at the MKCG Medical College Hospital here has raised eyebrows against proper functioning of Government blood banks.
The matter came to the fore when a four-year-old thalassemia child got his limbs swelled and sores across the body after receiving blood at the MKCG Blood Bank on August 21. The child’s blood has been tested HIV positive now.
The child belonging to Gajalabadi village under Soroda block has been taking blood since he was seven months old.
Meanwhile, bloods of the child’s parents were also tested for confirmation. However, their blood samples showed negative.
When asked, Chief District Medical Officer (CDMO) Dr Manoj Kumar Behera said a probe would be conducted to establish how the child was infected with HIV positive. People have demanded a high-level inquiry into the incident and action against those responsible.
