Tension prevailed at the VIMSAR at Burla after two youths allegedly thrashed a doctor on duty on Sunday.
Later, the two accused were detained and taken into police custody. Their identities were yet to be ascertained.
Sources said the incident occurred when the youths entered the Neurology Department of the hospital and allegedly thrashed Prof Suryakant Patjoshi.
According to eyewitnesses, the youths entered the Operation Theatre (OT) and asked Prof Patjoshi to come with them to a private nursing home. However, the doctor refused to oblige.
The youths manhandled the doctor in the OT and then tried to flee from the hospital. But some medical students caught them. Following this, tension gripped the VIMSAR hospital as angry medical students demanded a probe into the incident.
Later, police reached the hospital and took the two youths to the police station from interrogation. But one of them managed to give the police a slip while being taken to the police station.
Though the actual reason behind the assault was yet to be ascertained, one of the accused was detained by police and the interrogation process was underway.
