Tension in R'gada; locals block road

Published on:

Tension gripped parts of Gajapati district’s Rayagad block as hundreds of villagers staged a Rasta Roko at lanjipadar Chhak over suspicious death of an under-trial belonging to the locality at the Paralakhemundi jail a week ago.

According to information, Sana Sabar (30) had been arrested and sent to jail custody in an illegal liquor trade case on September 7.  But on September 8, he fell on the ground due to some reason and received injuries in the head. Jail officials took him to Paralakhemundi hospital and then to the MKCG Medical College Hospital and subsequently to the SCB Medical College Hospital in Cuttack. He died during treatment on September 10.

What was surprising is that the jail authorities didn’t inform family members about how Sana died.

The agitating locals demanded that the Government provide a compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the family. Movement of motor vehicles on Paralakhemundi-Brahmapur Road was disrupted from 8 am to 4.30 pm due to the agitation.   The locals withdrew the agitation only after BDO Bishwajit Barman gave them a written assurance to fulfill their demand.

One platoon police led by Rayagad PS IIC had been deployed to avert any untoward incident.
