Tension in Cong Bhawan as women members protest

Published on:

Tension prevailed at the Congress Bhawan here on Sunday after members of the State Mahila Congress members locked the gates of the building and held a demonstration.

But the situation turned uglier after another group opposed the move and tried to barge into the Congress Bhawan by breaking open the grill gates.

Later, State Mahila Morcha president Sumitra Jena said they were holding a peaceful demonstration, but a group of goons, on the instructions of some senior leaders, assaulted them. She was also targeted. She said they had lodge a complaint with the Capital police in connection with the incident.

Notably, after announcement of the candidates’ list, the Mahila Congress members have virtually revolted and said the AICC had instructed that more tickets should be allotted to women but the instruction has not been followed and only a handful of women have been given tickets.

But PCC president Niranjan Patnaik refuted the allegations, saying the Mahila Morcha president is unhappy because she did not get ticket for a particular seat.
