Tension gripped the Baleswar District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) after a mother of a two-year-old patient alleged that wrong antibiotic syrup was administered to her son by the hospital.

lauta Biwi of Ward-6 of the Baleswar Municipality said that after administrating of a dose of the liquid to her infant, she could realise by its smell and appearance that it was detol inside the bottle instead of Ofloxacin antibiotic.

She immediately brought the matter to the notice of the hospital authorities, she said.

Relatives and locals gheraoed the ADMO’s (Medical) office demanding action against those responsible for the lapses and alleging that spurious medicine was supplied by the hospital. Police brought the situation under control.

The hospital authorities, however, refuted the allegation, saying the bottle had been sealed and would be sent for lab test.

ADMO (Medical) SS Chaudhary said, “There is no chance of supply of such alleged liquid from the DHH. We have checked other bottles of Ofloxacin supplied to other patients as well as in our store. No abnormality was found. She (the complainant woman) might have brought dettol in an empty bottle of Ofloxacin and inadvertently used it. However as she complained, the bottle has been sealed and would be sent for lab test.”

lauta’s son Farhan Qadri had been admitted in the paediatric ward of the DHH for fever-related ailments on Monday.

The doctor had prescribed medicines which included the Ofloxacin liquid. lauta said the nurse on duty had supplied the bottle.
