Hospital vandalised, docs assaulted

The District Headquarters Hospital here faced the wrath of a violent mob following the death of a patient. The agitators belonging to a particular political party along with the relatives of the deceased alleged that the patient died due to the negligence of a doctor. They ransacked the hospital and assaulted the staff members, including the CDMO.

“I recognise and can name the persons who assaulted me. They broke the glass structure of the store and other furniture. The other patients faced a tough time after the incident while doctors in fear didn’t wish to perform duty,” said CDMO Dr Anup Ghosh.

He informed that the deceased was admitted in the hospital in a critical state. He was suffering from acute jaundice and diarrhoea. The Udla hospital of Mayurbhanj had sent the patient to Baleswar, he said.

He further stated that the patient underwent treatment for about 45 minutes in the infection ward. The doctor on duty after admitting him had administrated him the required drugs. There was no fault on the part of doctor, explained Ghosh, adding that he would lodge an FIR in this connection. Meanwhile, the agitators too lodged a complaint against the doctor in the local outpost.  While the incident took place around 8.30 am it continued till about 11.30 am.

The mob actions took place in the presence of police and a magistrate. As doctors fled the hospital, the patients as well as their relatives were in a state of panic.

According to sources, the diseased was identified as Kisangopal Sarad (23), a resident of Udla. Intellectuals condemning the incident said, “A patient’s death is an unfortunate thing. But for that vandalism cannot be allowed. The grievances should have been vented with the appropriate authority.”
