An incident of a schoolteacher flogging students at the Muturma Tribal Primary School in Umarkote block of Nabarangpur district came to light on Saturday.
According to available information, seven students, including a girl, of Class-III were admitted to a local hospital after they were beaten up by the teacher when they failed to answer the correct meanings of some words.
“Our teacher asked us the meanings of words in a class. We gave wrong answers and then she beat us,” said a student.
The students suffered bruises on their backs and hands, following which they were taken to the Umarkote Community Health Centre (CHC) for treatment.
The teacher Jayantibala Bhadra is reportedly absconding after the incident as the school authorities are unable to contact her.
Block Education Officer (BEO) Bikash Chandra Sarkar said that an inquiry would be made into the matter and necessary action would be taken against the teacher.
