The Thalassemia Care Society Odisha (TCSO) organised a seminar on “We Conquer Thalassemia” here on Sunday in which discussions on the changing scenario and global practices in treatment protocol of thalassemia were held.

The speakers also discussed about various future treatment options of Thalassemics as it is a dreaded disease and only can be cured through bone marrow transplant, which is highly expensive and less probable due to unavailability of matched HLA donors.

They said that at present, patients are struggling due to unavailability of proper and safe blood, i.e., Leucodepeted Packed Red Blood Cells and proper chelating medicines and demanded that the government take initiatives to ensure their availability.

Among others, bone marrow transplant specialist Dr Sunil Bhatta, Dr Jayadip Ghosh, Dr Debasish Mishra, Dr Haraprasad Pattnaik, Sanyashi Behera, DSSO, SSEPD and TCSO president Bijaya Kumar Rout and secretary Nirakar Panda were present.
