A technical paper meeting on ‘Detection of Gravitational Waves’ was organised by the Institution of Engineers (India), Rourkela local Centre here on Thursday.
Speaking on the theme, retired professor of Physics Department at the NIT, Rourkela (NITR) Dr TN Tiwari said gravitational waves which are tiny ripples in space and time had been predicted by Einstein exactly 100 years ago in 1915. For thousands of scientists across the world, a dream comes true when the gravitational waves were detected for the first time on February 11, 2016. This great discovery has opened a new area of research in astronomy to study black holes, neutron stars, pulsars etc, he added.
Dr Tiwari later explained about different theories of gravity by Einstein and Sir Issac Newton. He also informed about the elISA Mission or the evolved laser Interferometer Space Antenna planned by the European Space Agency to set up an observatory in space to measure up gravitational universe.
The presentation was followed by a brief interactive session on the central theme.
