Talcher mines lack facilities to save staff from heat waves

Published on:

Even as mercury has been rising with temperature touching 45 degrees Celsius mark in the mining areas under the Mahanadi Coalfields limited (MCl) in Talcher, adequate arrangements to beat the heat are yet to be made for the workers by the MCl authorities in all its major projects, alleged a workers' union in Talcher.

CITU district president Ananda Acharya told this paper that despite repeated pleas with the MCl authorities and the local administration, no step is being taken to provide facilities in the mines at several projects in Talcher.  Dust emission has been all-time high during the scorching summe but the MCl authorities have failed to put in place well-equipped rest sheds and adequate drinking water in the mines.

Besides, no rescheduling in the work hours has been made keeping in view the rising heat and the health hazard it poses for the workers, he alleged.
