Tagore's 'Geetabitan' finds faithful Odia version

Published on:

Geetabitan, a translated version of Rabindranath Tagore’s Bengali original book by Sanjaya Pattnaik, was released here last week by eminent poet Ramakanta Rath. The book comprising 172 pages contains 50 of Tagore’s poems.

The translated volume provides a refreshing wave of beauty with complete fidelity to the original. The brilliant imageries of Tagore’s poems come vividly fresh and alive in almost all pieces by translator Pattnaik. The delicate nuances and the subtleties with the rich felicity of expression appear in their Odia version without any distortion.

In poems such as Mahabishwe Mahakashe, the lofty, eloquent and dignified tone of Tagore is quite discernible in Pattnaik’s Odia rendering too. The typical love poems of Tagore as Tomar Premasudha Rase, the appeal transgress the merely personal and become universal. It is faithfully delineated in Pattnaik’s Odia equivalent with the same economy of expression.

The book is handy and available with the lark Publication, Bhubaneswar. Noted writer Haraprasad Das presided over the book release ceremony while many intellectuals, writers and poets along with the book’s celebrated publisher Mahendra Mishra were present on the occasion. A CD was also produced containing some of the selected poems of this translated Odia version because of their lovely lilting melodious music and exquisite lyricism.
