Senior Advocate of the Odisha High Court Surya Prasad Mishra will be the new Advocate General (AG) of the State.
Mishra’s appointment as the top legal adviser of the State was confirmed on Tuesday by Governor SC Jamir after the State Government zeroed in on the 60-year-old lawyer, who is currently officiating as President of the Odisha High Court Bar Association.
The Constitutional post in the State was lying vacant ever since former AG Asok Mohanty quit the position on September 12 in controversial circumstances relating to chit fund scam. For over a month, the State remained without its top legal advisor and adjudication of certain cases in the High Court also suffered without an AG.
Born at Banpur of Khordha district in December 1953, Mishra obtained his law degree from the MS law College, Cuttack in the year 1976 and began practising in the High Court from the same year. In 2005, he was designated as a Senior Advocate of the High Court. In April this year, he had been elected as the President of the High Court Bar Association in a three-corner contest.
