India's homegrown subsonic surface-to-surface cruise missile Nirbhay, a supplement to Brarmhos missile with 290 km range, reportedly failed in a trial on Friday.
It was the third test of the missile, while maiden trial on March 12, 2013 was too a failure and the second one carried on October 17 last year was not up to the desired mark.
According to sources, the missile was launched from lC III of the Integrated Test Range (ITR) in Chandipur, Baleswar at around 11.38 am, yet after about 10 minutes following its takeoff, it developed technical snag. The missile, having a range of 750 km – 1,000 km, deviated from the pre-designated path.
The mission was aborted in the midway and it fell in the Bay of Bengal, sources said. The two-stage missile has a length of six metres, a diameter of
0.52 m, a wing span 2.7 m
and a launch weight of about 1,500 kg.
