On the holy occasion of Sunia and Bamana-Janma in Jagannath Temple, the Naba Anka, (new number) of Gajapati king Dibyasingha Deb began on Saturday. With 64 Anka, the King will execute his royal works from here onwards ending a Sunia. Further, the New Year of Utkal (ancient Odisha) was also observed. Here onwards, 1429 Sala (year) of Utkal will be counted till a year ending Sonia also. With religious activities at palace, King Dev was offered blessings from Brhamins of Muktimadap. As per new calendar, the King changed his old books and records with new ones. On this occasion, the holy deities in the shrine were decorated with gold ornaments and offered special rituals. Bhagaban Baman is the fifth incarnation of Bishnu in Hindu tradition. This marks traditionally the New Year of Puri King as well as of the ancient Odisha.
The centuries old tradition of Naba Anka and Sala is prevalence in the Jagannath Temple. The day is important for astrologers because they have to mention the old digits in their almanacs adding 64 Naka and 1429 Sala. Worth mentioning here that in every 100th year, the digit of King begins with 1 and changes in a numerical manner from Sunia every year.
