A major fraud case has come to the fore in which an insurance agent of Sundargarh obtained death certificate against his living brother-in-law (sister’s husband) and withdrew insurance compensation of `10 lakh from the insurance company he is working with.

Acting on a complaint lodged in this regard, the Sundargarh police registered a case against three accused, including the insurance agent, on Monday evening and are now searching for the accused.

Sources said one lalmani Rohidas, originally belonging to Jharsuguda, resides with his family in Tildega village under the Sundargarh district’s Kinjrikela police station. lalmani's brother-in-law (wife's brother) Basudev Rohidas, an agent of insurance company Birla

Sunlife, resides with his wife and children at Sudarnanpur village under the Talsara police station.

According to the FIR lodged by lalmani's son Jagat in the Kinjrikela police station, lalmani had bought a Birla Sunlife policy with insured amount of `10 lakh in the year 2012. While lalmani had wanted his son Jagat to be his nominee, Basudev cunningly put his wife's name as nominee.

After a few months of policy, Basudev went to the concerned insurance office at Sundargarh and informed that policyholder lalmani had died. Insurance officials then advised Basudev to bring nominee with requisite documents, including death certificate of lalmani, for money disbursement.

Basudev soon obtained a death certificate of lalmani from the Rajpur PHC in Jharsuguda district adopting unfair means. Then he produced the death cetificate and other documents and introduced a woman as widow of lalmani on December 5, 2012. Subsequently, they managed to take Rs10 from insurance company.

In his complaint, Jagat has alleged that Basudev and his wife had taken the original policy bond from his father lalmani and kept with them.

Both Kinjrikela police and Talsara police are now searching for three persons, Basudev, his wife and the woman who acted as nominee and widow of lalmani.

“A case has been registered against three persons, including two women. Prime accused Basudev is absconding now. We have started investigation. We are yet to get names of the two women,” said Kinjrikela PS SI B Bag, adding that the three would be arrested soon.
