Sundagarh accident victim's body dug out after 10 days

Police dug out the body of a man after ten days of his burial in a graveyard in Sundargarh. The old man had died in a road accident, and his family members had buried his body as they had no money for his funeral.

When the family members realised that they won’t get any compensation, they lodged a complaint in the police station about the kin’s accidental death. Police then registered a case and dug out the body and sent the same for postmortem.

Birsa Soren(55), a resident of Ranibagicha at Sundargarh, had been hit by a bus named Radheshyam at Panchamhara in Sundargarh and become critical on January 13. Police officials of the Sadar police station reached the spot and sent him to Sundargarh DHH.

Police then advised his family members to lodge a report regarding the accident but the family members didn’t do so as Birsa was very critical at that time. After 10 days, doctors advised family members to shift him to the VSS Medical College Hospital as his condition deteriorated. But, the family members took him to the house as they had no money. After battling for life for eight more days, Birsa succumbed to his injuries on January 31. The poverty-ridden family members buried his body in the graveyard the next day.

After ten days, the family members realised that since they have not lodged any report in the police station and police have not conducted postmortem, they won’t get any benefit. They lodged a written complaint on Thursday urging for help.

Acting on the complaint, a police team led by IIC GR Mohapatra went to the burial ground and dug out the body in presence of a magistrate.  Thereafter, police sent the body for postmortem. On the police report, the district administration provided `10,000 from the Red Cross to the family.
