Sum Hosp conducts skin transplant on burn victims

First in the annals of medical history in the State, the Institute of Medical Sciences and Sum Hospital has transplanted skin on two burn victims to ensure speedy healing of the wounds. The two patients, Pravati Behera (43) who had suffered nearly 50 per cent burn injuries on her body and Pratap Nayak having nearly 70 per cent injuries in Kolkata underwent skin transplantation (skin donated by their relatives) under the direct supervision of hospital associate professor and burn, plastic and cosmetic surgery head Dr Jayant Kumar Dash.

“Skin transplant not only reduces the pain of the patient almost immediately but also prevents infection and septicemia, the leading cause of death in burn patients. It further prevents albumin, electrolyte and blood loss from the body of the victim. This is the first ever case of skin transplant in the State,” said Dr Dash.
