With the ground water level plummeting rapidly, many rural pockets of Subarnapur district have been struggling to get drinking water.
While tube wells in most of the villages fail to produce water, the situation has aggravated at Makhankhal village in Durjantaila gram panchayat under Birmaharajpur block.
The residents of Makhankhal village having a population of 350 are facing acute drinking water crisis. A drinking water supply project is lying damaged and defunct before its commissioning. Only two tube wells are in this village from which the water sourced is not worth consuming. Consequently, the villagers are depending on a pond for all purposes.
Besides, there is a stream on which the villagers too fall back on but the stream water is also used for bathing by both human beings and domestic animals. It is here from which they also collect water for drinking. As a result, the residents are suffering from various diseases.
Despite several requests, the officials of the RWSS are yet to visit the village to repair the water supply system or make any other arrangement, the villagers alleged.
