The dilapidated building of the lachhipur Government Primary School under Sonepur block poses a grave risk to around 15 students of 1-5 class, who have to bear with its crumbling infrastructure on a daily basis.
The students and their parents blame both the governing body of school and Sonepur block authorities for the present state of affairs at one of the district’s premier educational institutions that was established 120 years ago. Sources said the class rooms and the other rooms of the school have developed cracks.
Though no students have been injured yet due to the asbestos roof which breaks regularly, chances of a major mishap cannot be ruled out during rainy season, added sources.
“I hope the governing body is not waiting for any eventuality to occur before talking adequate measures to ensure the safety of students,” said social activist Jyoti Prakash Panigrahi of lachhipur.
He said the parents of the students have repeatedly urged the authority and administration to relocate the classes so that the school can be renovated but nothing has done in this regard.
A teacher of the school admitted that the building is completely unsafe.
Expressing his helplessness, he said the students are being forced to study in the old building as there are no alternative arrangements due to shortage of classrooms.
