The Orissa High Court has allowed bail to Vice-Chancellor of Sambalpur University Sanjiv Mittal in the most sensational Dinabandhu Mishra self-immolation case on April 20.
Mishra, in his dying declaration, categorically mentioned the name of the VC Mittal for abetting the murder stoking a lot of hue and cry. People from all sections of society, university employees, union, civil societies, former MPs and MLAs, former VC and former Professors of SU demanded the arrest of the VC and two other accused.
But Prof Mittal applied for anticipatory bail that was heard in the HC and the District Judge Court in Sambalpur. The final hearing was held on June 17 in the HC and the order was announced on Friday where Judge SK Panigrahi allowed the bail to Prof Mittal.
“No case has been made out warranting the petitioner’s custodial interrogation and no reasonable apprehension lies that if the petitioner is released on bail, he is likely to abscond. Therefore this court allows his bail prayer for anticipatory bail,” the HC said in order.
