In spite of sporadic violent incidents in the campus, the Student Council Advisory Committee of the Utkal University has recommended to the PG Council to hold Students’ Union elections this year scheduled for October 5.
According to sources, the Advisory Committee took the decision at a meeting held on Monday to this effect. The final decision on the matter would be taken at a PG Council meeting scheduled to be held on Wednesday.
“The situation at the Utkal University is very calm now. Hence, we have decided at the advisors’ meeting to conduct elections this year. We hope there will be no violence in the campus,” said University Student Council Advisor Jayant Parida.
Notably, the Students’ Union elections at the State’s premier university were cancelled last year due to student unrest.
Meanwhile, the university authorities have strengthened the security system and installed CCTV cameras at the campus to keep a close vigil on the students and troublemakers.
However, student unrest continued to prevail at the BJB Autonomous College here.
Demanding arrest of people involved in attack on their fellow colleagues in past, students of the Arts stream on Monday locked the Arts Block main gate and prohibited entry of staffs, including teachers.
