Students seek varsity status for GM College

The students of the Gangadhar Meher Autonomous College here under the banner of the Paschim Odisha Kriyanusthan Committee strongly opposed the apathy of the State Government towards its negligence to the premier educational institution of the State

“Staff crunch andnon- availability of infrastructure are the major problems of the college,” reacted the members of the Kriyanusthan Committee in a Press meet held here.

“If the State Government did not fulfill the demands of the college within a month, we would go for a massive agitation for the interest of the college and its students,” committee convener Saurav Ranjan Mahapatra warned.

“We want GM College to be converted into a unitary university like that of the Revenshaw College (now Revenshaw University) with no further delay since the students and the public as a whole have been demanding it since years and the college fulfills all the criteria for it,” Mahapatra added.

GM College student union general secretary, who is also a frontline member of the Kriyanusthan Committee, Amit Tiwari said MPs Pyarimohan Mahapatra and Baijayanta Panda had given strong assurances to the students and the teachers here to fulfill the genuine demands during their visit to the college as guests on different occasions.

“But their promises have turned hoax,” alleged Tiwari and all other students present at the Press meet.

“GM College apart, we also demand development of all colleges of the western region. We further demand autonomy to the VSS Medical College and Hospital,” they said.

On establishment of High Court bench, they said, “We extend our whole hearted support to the advocate fraternity and their demand.” They expressed worries on the matter of poverty in western Odisha in spite of the availability of all valuable natural resources and vibrant human resources.
