Students ready for road traffic management

At least 100 students from different local colleges completed a week-long pre-induction training here on Sunday to join as Student Traffic Volunteers (STVs) in the Commissionerate police. The STVs will assist the traffic police very soon to manage the road traffic during peak hours and educate the road users, said city traffic ACP PK Dalei.

The State Government last year had approved a proposal of the Commissionerate police to raise STVs in the twin cities of Cuttack and Bhubaneswar under the Student Traffic Volunteers Scholarship Scheme (STVSS), which provides an incentive by way of stipend to each student-volunteer for his/her service in traffic management.

The students were sponsored by their respective colleges and selected as STVs by the city DCP on the basis of their aptitude, physical fitness, enthusiasm and the desire to undertake social service. Besides getting a traffic jacket, a cap, a pair of shoes and an identity card, a STV will get `100 for each working day of a three-hour shift.

Apart from budgetary grant by the Government, the scheme proposes to raise funds through corporate sponsorship and funds provided by the Odisha Road Safety Society, said Dalei, adding that the monthly stipends of the students would be credited to their bank accounts.
