A group of girl students of the Kasturba Upper Primary School in Raikia block of Kandhamal district on Monday locked up the school gate and held a demonstration demanding action against two women teachers.
Around 160 girl students residing in the school’s hostel resorted to the agitation after their repeated pleas fell on deaf ears. The students alleged that the two teachers repeatedly beat them for minor faults.
Earlier in September, the students had complained to school Headmistress Snigdha Priyadarshini Parida seeking stringent action against the duo.
On September 16, senior officials of the Education Department had visited the school for an inquiry. But they did not take any action against them, the students alleged.
After being denied justice, the aggrieved students once again sat on a dharna. Later, the ADO, the BDO and the BEO intervened in the matter and assured action against the erring teachers following which the students withdrew their agitation.
But as the assurances remained unfulfilled, the students once again launched their agitation on the day.
