Student unrest plagues GIET in Brahmapur

Once again, student unrest in one of the premier private engineering colleges here has come to the fore. Hundreds of agitated students of the GIET engineering college damaged seven to eight college buses on Monday in protest against the deliberate delay caused by the college management in fulfilling their genuine demands.

Classes in this college are not being held regularly, for which students are detained in the examinations every year, giving rise to their increasing back paper appearances, sources said. Though the college authorities are said to have fixed CCTV in every classroom, the authorities fail to keep track of the irregular holding of classes and to detect the erring faculty members, the agitating students alleged.

As the classes are not being held sincerely and regularly, the students are worried about clearance of their back papers, said a student. Due to non-clearance of back paper, a student committed suicide two days back, giving rise tension in the college. This shocking incident has been worrying parents of students.

The students also allege that the college authorities have failed to keep their promises for providing basic amenities and infrastructure and quality teaching as assured during the time of their admission. The students also demanded change of the HoD and the Dean from their respective posts immediately to restore peace in the college. After the police reached the spot, the situation was brought under control.

In the mean time, a meeting was held between the Dean of the college Prof Surendranath Jena and students’ representatives to find a solution to the issues in consultation with the college management. However, the situation continues to be tense. There is, moreover, a public perception that there should be some mechanism to ensure regular and quality teaching by the faculty in such private colleges which often make huge buildings as their showcases without emphasising on competent and adequate faculty and quality teaching.
