An incident has come to the fore where a BTech student gave his ATM card number to a phone caller and subsequently got messages informing that Rs31,000 withdrawn from his ICICI Bank account in three takes.
When banks have been informing customers time and again not to divulge ATM number to any other person, the incident of miscreants befooling the student has come as a practical example to be learnt by others only.
According to information, Sudeep Behera, a resident of Neelachal Nagar here and a B Tech student of a private engineering college, on Saturday morning received a phone call from one Goutam Barik, as saved in his mobile, telling him that his bank account has been inoperative and he has to give only the number printed on the ATM so that his account can be made operative. The caller too told him not to give the secret password of the ATM card or the bank account number.
As the caller didn’t ask for the secret number or the account number, Sudeep believed the caller to be a bank official and gave the ATM number. Sudeep too kept talking with the caller as wanted by him. The two talked for three minutes.
After the call ended, Sudeep received three messages informing that Rs31,000 was withdrawn in three phases from an ATM counter. Soon, Sudeep lodged a complaint at the BN Pur police station in this regard. The police have now transferred the case to the Cyber police station for investigation.
