Strong wind led  to the Chilika boat capsize, in which six persons lost their lives on July 16, as per the investigation report by the Directorate of Ports and Inland Water Transport, informed Commerce and Transport  Secretary G Srinivas on Friday.

The report has ruled out any technical malfunction of the boat.

“Following the tragedy, the Government had asked the Directorate of Ports and Inland Water Transport to conduct an inquiry by visiting the spot. Today, we have received the report in which it has been stated that the mishap occurred due to gusty winds. We are reviewing the findings of the report so as to ensure what steps can be taken to prevent such mishaps,” said Srinivas.

He further informed that there were adequate lifesaving equipments including lifejackets and lifebuoys in the boat. However, the equipments were not used by the passengers.

“lifesaving equipments were provided for the first time by the Khordha district administration and 20 lifejackets were also provided to the boat owner against the seating capacity of 15 persons. We would now ensure that awareness is created and the tourists as well as others are sensitised to use life saving equipment,” Srinivas added.
