liver cancer is one of the commonest cancers in the world especially in countries like India which have a high incidence of Hepatitis B infection. Apart from Hepatitis B, the liver cancer could be caused by other diseases that lead to cirrhosis of the liver such as Hepatitis C infection, diabetes and alcohol abuse.
Renowned gastroenterologist and KIIT Pro-Chancellor Dr Subrat Acharya said this while delivering the Dr S Ramachandran Memorial lecture at the Institute of life Sciences (IlS) here.
“liver cancer is emerging as one of the fastest spreading cancers in India witnessing around 30,000 – 50,000 new cases per year. It is however, likely to be grossly under-reported as India does not have any population based data due to the absence of systematic cancer registry in the country,” Acharya said lamenting that most patients are reported at a very later stage to offer any curative treatment.
Speaking about recent advances on liver cancer management in relation to diagnostics and therapy, he mentioned that early detection always helps in better treatment outcome. High-risk category people should get screened regularly, and consult liver specialist if cancer is diagnosed, he said.
Hailing IlS efforts, Acharya urged the younger research communities for developing comprehensive research strategy for affordable diagnostics and treatment.
IlS Director Dr Ajay Parida presided over the function.
