State's child sex ratio continues to be alarming

Despite several interventions by various stakeholders, including the State Government and civil societies, the child sex ratio (CSR) continues to remain at an alarming level in Odisha.

As per the Census-2011, the CSR (number of females per 1,000 males in the age group 0-6 years) in Odisha stands at 941 declining by 12 points from 953 in 2001. Nayagarh district has witnessed the highest fall of 49 points in the CSR that stands at 855 in 2011 as against 904 in 2001.

This is followed by Dhenkanal and Angul districts with the CSR staggering at 877 and 889.

In spite of the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (Prohibition of Sex Selection) Act, large numbers of people are undergoing sex determination tests and sex selective eliminations in the State.

lamenting over such a disturbing trend, journalists here on Thursday pitched for the need of more and more awareness campaigns against female foeticide to sensitise people, especially women, to prevent gender-based sex selection and gender discrimination.

Several scribes also recommended for recognition and incentive for single-girl child families by the Government to address the declining child sex ratio.

Besides, Manju Prava Dhal, coordinating member of the host organisation Centre for Action Research and Documentation, pressed for registration and renewal of ultrasound clinics and proper monitoring of the PCPNDT Act by the State Government.
