The State Government has urged the Centre to consider establishing a bovine genomic centre in the State as it has favourable agro-climatic zones.
In a letter to Union Secretary for Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Fisheries Ashok Kumar Angurana, Chief Secretary AP Padhi has also urged him to introduce the sex-sorted semen production technology at the Frozen Semen Bank (FSB) in Cuttack.
The Union Government has announced new Central sector schemes in its Budget 2016-17 to address farmer-centric issues in agriculture and allied sectors.
The schemes, Pashudhan Sanjeevni, Promotion of Sex-Sorted Semen, Electronic Platform for Trading of Bovino Germplasm (e-Pashuhaat) and establishment of National Bovine Genomic Centre, are expected to bring about rapid development in the dairy sector.
Odisha has a large indigenous bovine population including four indigenous cattle breeds and two
indigenous buffalo breeds, which have been registered by the National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources (NBAGR).
Besides, the FSB in Cuttack is an A-grade semen station in the country meeting the semen requirement of the State. Introduction of the sex-sorted semen production technology at the FSB would be very much beneficial to the dairy farmers.
