A two-member team of the Odisha Water Resources Department (WRD) would visit the barrage project site in the upper catchment area of the Mahanadi in Chhattisgarh on July 25. The team would collect details about the project being constructed upstream of the Hirakud Dam reservoir and its nature of construction and also examine its consequences for Odisha. Meanwhile, a tripartite meeting between Odisha, Chhattisgarh and the Central Water Commission (CWC) over the project would be held after August 15. WRD Engineer-in-Chief Janaki Ballav Mohapatra said a discussion about the visit of the team from the State was decided in consultation with his Chhattisgarh counterpart. Earlier, in a letter to Project Appraisal Centre of CWC, Mohapatra had pointed out that Chhattisgarh has not entered into any inter-State agreement with Odisha on the Mahanadi basin water allocation. He said since Hirakud is an old structure, any diversion needs to be resisted on rational ground.
