State mulls to set up law Commission

Published on:

The State Government is mulling to constitute a State law Commission on lines with the National law Commission for review of existing laws and formulation of new acts. Earlier, law Amendment Committees were being formed to review laws. However, no such committee has been formed since 2007. According to sources, the law Department has started preparing modalities for formation of the commission, which would have three-year term.

While the law Department Secretary would be ex-officio member of the committee, the Advocate-General or any legal luminary nominated by him would be its member. Besides, an expert having a minimum of 20 years of experience in legal, environment, constitution and cyber law, a Joint Secretary level officer having knowledge of revenue, law and administration and a serving or retired professor of a State or national law university would be its other members.

The commission would provide assistance to the State legislature in drafting laws, suggesting steps for administrative reforms and providing suggestions for settlement of inter-State disputes.
