State doing skill-mapping of returnees

Published on:

The State Government is conducting a skill-mapping of the migrant workers, who have returned during the lockdown, in an effort to provide them employment in existing or upcoming industries.

Industries Secretary Hemant Sharma said the Government is trying to bring these workers to a formal setup through skill up-gradation before enabling a match-making between the labour requirement of the industries and the skill sets of the workers.

More than 3.5 lakh migrant workers have so far reached the State in a span of only 25 days while the Government expects another five lakh returnees in coming days.

As soon as they land in temporary medical centres (TMCs) and quarantine facilities, the Government, through the Technical Education Department and Self-Help Groups, is trying to map their current skill sets, said Sharma.

The skill-mapping of migrant workers would be beneficial in the long run as manpower is required for MSME units, and several large projects expected to start soon.

Sharma said the migrants were mostly working in textile, apparel and garment mills. The State Government is planning two big textile parks, one at Dhamra in Bhadrak district and another near Ganjam and Khurda districts.
