Concerned over the declining trend in the sex ratio and the growing number of female foeticide, the Health and Family Welfare Department has decided to set up squads at the district level to strictly implement the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PCPNDT) Act.
“Our main aim is to check misuse of pre-natal diagnosis. Though the PCPNDT Act envisages a regulation for the use of pre-natal diagnostic techniques such as ultrasound for the purpose of detecting genetic or metabolic disorders, it is commonly seen that this is used otherwise to abort the female child.,” said Health and Family Welfare Minister Atanu Sabyasachi Nayak after participating in a workshop at the State Secretariat.
National Health Mission Managing Director Roopa Mishra said stringent measures will be taken to check misuse of ultrasound machines. District level squads will soon be formed. Among others, MlAs Raseswari Panigrahy and Tukuni Sahoo were present.
