Starving S'garh elderly couple wait for death

An elderly poor couple of Sundargarh is waiting for their death due to starvation.

Sources said Purnachandra Kaudi (75) and his wife Sabitri (70) have been residing at Ujalpur village under Tangarpali Block of Sundargarh. Purnachandra has two daughters, but they are married. They are busy with their family. Purnachndra and Sabitri had only one son, but he died last year.

Son laba had gone to Beheramal of Jharsuguda last year to work there. He fell ill but due to financial hardship he could not get treatment and so died. After the death of laba, there is no one to look after Purnachandra and Sabitri in their old age.

The old couple is residing in a rented house and the owner of the house is not taking any rent looking into his financial hardship. But the condition of the house is very pathetic and the small cottage can collapse any time.

The couple is also getting 10 kg rice and old age pension of Rs 300 every month. When the evening approaches, the couple lives in their house in darkness as there is no electricity. They do not have money to purchase kerosene either.

“I have met the couple and am trying to provide old age pension to Purnachandra Kaudi as early as possible after doing necessary paper formalities,” said Tangarpali BDO GD Nayak.
