The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) issued a notice to the District Collector here over the failure of the Government to contain starvation death.
One Sreedhar, son of Rangahar Mishra, died of malnutrition on February 21 last. The incident occurred in Jagannathprasad village under Balipokhari Gram Panchayat in Bhandaripokhari Block.
Supreme Court lawyer and rights activist Radhakanta Tripathy had moved to the apex human rights body seeking immediate intervention into the issue.
After the death of Sreedhar, his parents are starving and leading a miserable life as the Government did not come to their rescue. The incident is so much important due to the fact that the plight of Sreedhar and his family was reported in media, but still the officials remained apathetic, Radhakanta had alleged.
The family has been living below poverty line. The only blessing the family got is a BPl card. However, the family lives without roof over their head. The family members don’t get two square meals every day due to abject poverty, he said.
Baikuntha is a patient in the family who is tied to a tree for a couple of years. Due to financial constraint, he could not be treated.
The situation of the family is growing worse since none of the Government officials has been paying any heed to the plight of this unfortunate family.
Rangahar has become partially blind and his wife Saraswati has also been suffering from other diseases. They are yet to get free medical treatment with free medicine, a house to live in and two square meals.
Tripathy had requested the NHRC to direct the State Government to ensure immediate appropriate medical treatment to Rangadhar and Saraswati and provide all benefits under welfare schemes.
